All the sudden noticed some movement and one of the butterflies had hatched from it's coccoon!!! Well, it was not in a very good state. :-(
I think in my efforts to protect it from predators I might have gotten in the way of it's natural process. Seems there is a decent amount of liquid that comes out of the coccoon and by putting it amongst the leaves, one of her wings got stuck to a leaf. It looks like she had struggled a bit to free it and all fell apart from there. Her other wing looks like it didn't quite come free from the coccoon. She was struggling quite a bit so I tried to unstick her wing, that didn't work, then it was wet and just stuck together. She could not get her balance at all and I'm sad to say she didn't make it. :-( I know they can't all live, but this was sad to see her struggle.... The other coccoon should hatch tomorrow. I read that the coccoon becomes transparent about 24 hours before it hatches. and here is tonights picture.
I hope I am home from work before this one hatches. I'll keep you posted....
