We were able to pick up some medical supplies that work really well and that we don't have at home. Mel had a small cut that was almost healed when we left home, but being in this tropical climate and being in the water a lot had caused it to open up again and it got infected. I got a few reef cuts on my feet and there was 1 spot on the side of the ball of my foot that I didn't know I cut.....it also got infected......I had to have it scrubbed out.......Mel held and squeezed my ankle and Scott held and squeezed my foot while he scrubbed and I cussed.....man it hurt!!!!!!! Now I have to make sure it is kept clean and I change the bandages probably 3 times each day. This was such a tiny cut, maybe 1/4" long and 1/16" deep, but amazing how they can get infected soo easily......wounds take forever to heal here, he said it probably would take a month to heal........unfortunately because of where it is located, it is hard to get up on the board because you use the ball of your foot for balance.
I am still going on all of my sessions and still getting waves, but I'm a little slower.
This wave is at "insides". It is a little faster and the set waves are bigger than where we usually go. This is a small day here, so the wave doesn't look like much..
Every camp session the kids do a litter pick. This is Rachel and Lucy holding up flash cards with pictures of trash and organic matter. The kids yell out "organic" or "non organic"
Then they had about 10 minutes to run around the beach and street and gather as much trash as they could.
Dan with the kids
Olie and Aaron with the kids
Lucy with one of the girls
When time was up, everyone went back to the camp to wash up.
They filled 4 bags with trash.....
Rachel tries to explain about throwing trash away in bins instead of on the ground and how much trash could be taken off the beach if they did these trash picks every day....
It is very cool to see all these kids come to the classes and these daily activities. They come because they want to, they are voluntary. Hopefully the kids will learn and take with them how important it is to take care of their village and their ocean, which provides them with their food.
We saw a "blood moon" a couple nights ago. It is an eclipse, but the moon is red. This is the best picture I could get with my little camera.
Then a few minutes later.
Everyone from the village was lined up along the street beating pots and pans together and shouting. One of the guys who works here at the camp would not look at it, he said it is bad luck. We found out from some others that they make all the noise to scare away the "thing" that is covering the moon. Then when the eclipse is over, they believe they have scared it away........
It was a super fun wave and such a great time.
This is Jacob
Jen - we have gotten along great....super sweet
This is Simone
Olie doing a back flip
Sakir - he was one of my coaches last year as well.
Don't you just love the color of the water!!??
A few days have gone by now, we still have not been into Kuta to get on the Internet.
The cuts on our feet have gotten more swollen and they seem to be getting worse, getting bigger, not healing. Simon took a look at Mel's and immediately said he had streptococcus. He cleaned it up again and told him he needed to take a round of antibiotics. As soon as I took the bandage off of my foot, we realized it was the same thing. He said I probably picked it up from the reef, and it is all over in the Indian Ocean. He said it is very easily spread and since we are in the same bed, we have probably spread it to each other. I have never heard of streptococcus except "strep throat" - maybe this is just a different strain, but if you don't get rid of it, it will continue to eat away at your skin, making your wound bigger and bigger.........UGH!!!!!!!
Today I passed on the boat trip and went to town to get antibiotics. I always travel with some, but I am not sure if they will work on this and amoxicillin works here, so I got Mel and I each a round of it......
We will probably need to stay out of the water for a few days. Simon said we can still surf, but we have to be very careful and we need to clean our wounds very well each time we get out of the water. There hasn't been much of a swell this past week, but tomorrow is supposed to pick up. I guess we will have to decide what we are going to do. Bummer to have a little over a week of camp left and to not be able to get in the water!!!!!
Here is one of the many resident geckos in the camp. They would catch and munch down these really big flying beetle things... You can see the 2nd one's chin sticking out from the upper floor board.
I got a chance to go to a market where there would be hand woven fabrics. It was tough to get thru all the people at the market place. It was crazy!!!!!
We went to several weaving houses.
These ladies sit for hours weaving!!!!! They make beautiful pieces, but way too much money....most of them were selling for about $40 per meter......even the machine made pieces were too much money. The hand made batiks were over $60 per meter. I didn't buy anything, I will wait till I get to Bali and hopefully I can get some batiks there.....for ALOT less...
Love all the different modes of transportation. Most people get around by motorbike, but there are still several horse drawn buggies..
We are taking another day out of the water, our wounds are healing..... Tomorrow we have a 2 day break from camp, while they get ready for the next group of guests. We will be heading over to the Gili Islands, staying on Gili Meno. It is the quietest island. I am hoping with just a couple more days of rest we will be good to go when we come back to surf camp.......
I'll post again when we can get internet...
