Gardens Galore

It seems all my posts are related to yard work, but I guess the reality is that most of our time these days (or is that every day) is spent on yard work.....

The tomato garden is finished and all planted.  Still working on the fun painting part.....

There are 7 different kinds of tomatoes, a yellow and a purple pepper, cucumbers, carrots, radishes, beans and sweet peas!!!  YUM!!!
Now we will see if any of it grows worth a darn.....

We have been watching all the trees come to life after their hard prune and it seemed the fig tree wasn't doing much.  I noticed some new leaves at the bottom of the trunk were getting eaten pretty rapidly.

I had no idea what would "skeletonize" the leaves.  One website said to go out late at night with a flashlight and catch the critter on the spot.   Well, I did and I was quite surprised that the leaves were covered with earwigs!!!  I never knew they could do soo much damage!!!  Turns out they were eating the new buds that were trying to emerge from the trunks!!!  THOSE BUGGERS!!!!    Mel grabbed bug spray and I was soo afraid it would hurt the fig tree.....NOPE!!  It was fine.  The next day, after more research online, I bought Neem Oil.  This is an all natural product that is used in organic gardening.  I repells the bugs from your plants.    I sprayed the entire fig, every nook and cranny I could find......
The next day I noticed the new tomato plants had holes in their leaves......UGH!!!  More Neem Oil!!!!   It has been just a week since I found this new wonder product and already there are new buds actually making it thru the trunk on the fig and the tomato plants are not getting attacked!!!  YEA!!!!
The only issue now is how to keep them off the new seedlings that are just popping up.  I don't want to have to spray them every day!!!  Maybe a thick border around the planted area???

After getting the tomato garden finished, Mel started in on the back veggie gardens.  He got the ground all dug up and leveled, then he made a foundation form.

He mixed and formed 4 gardens in 4 days.   It was ALOT of work!!!

Then came the project of gopher screen to keep those suckers out of the beds.

Now the pile of bricks will start to go down as he figures out how to be a brick layer.  :-)

The mulch is finally all spread out, we found that the earwigs were hiding under the big mulch piles, so we needed to get rid of their houses!!!

While I was checking everything over in the yard, I looked closer at the Persimmon Tree and I believe what I am seeing are baby persimmons!!!

Could it really be????  Fruit the first year???  I  haven't seen any flowers.....I don't know how old the tree was when I bought it, but I really didn't expect any fruit for a couple years.....  AWESOME!!!!!   :-).   I checked online and sure enough, these will be flowers soon and then fruit!!!!!   YIPEE!!!!

The oranges on the navel tree still are not quite ready, but it looks like next year will be a great year for fruit!!
There are flowers everywhere!!!!!    I love the smell!!!!

Not much else happening, just trying to get as much done as possible, next surgery less than a week away now......

Have a great week, enjoy your yard!!!
I'll check in with you soon.    :-)

  2. I love looking at all the pictures of your hard work. Your yard is just incredible. I'm sure this time next year you will be twiddling your thumbs trying to find something to do. Good luck with the surgery -- hope it goes just as well as the first.
