For almost 25 years I have worked as a mail carrier and have worn the same uniform day after day. I have pride in my work and my appearance.
We have had several new postmasters, supervisors etc. over the years. Our office is a "training office" of sorts, so always new people with their ideas of how to FIX all that is wrong with the postal service.
So..... this newest postmaster has decided that we are not in compliance with the uniform code......and that our shorts need to be level with our knees. She came around yesterday and told a select few people that we need to drop the hem in our shorts......
I told her that if I dropped the hem it would be a raw hem, she said "fine".
So, I came home and took the hem out of 1 pair of my shorts and this is what it looks like........
The part that has been hemmed is quite a bit darker since it has not been in the sun. I can't believe they want me to go to work and deliver the mail looking like this!!!!!
The public is not going to know that this sloppy mess is not my idea.....
I called my shop steward to question this and I was told that to be in compliance, our shorts, skirts, etc have to be 3" above the knee, NOT at the knee. She also told me that usually we are given a period of time to "fix" any incompliance. I do not get my uniform allowance until February, so I guess I would have to purchase a pair of shorts on my own (at $54.00)
My shop steward called the postmaster to discuss this and she also was told that I will have to go to work with my hem dropped......
I am fine with having to have my hem lengthened, if EVERYONE else has to also, but so far not everyone has been instructed to comply.
I just can't believe that with all the issues going on with the postal service that the length of our shorts is such a big deal that we would not be given adequate time to comply.......
On a side note: I wear a 38" inseam and my shorts have a 7" inseam, I really don't think that is too "short"
Anyway, that is my beef and I just had to vent!!!!!
